National NPP organizer rebukes GRA over tax collection approach in Kumasi leading to shop closures | General news

National organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticized the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), saying its officials were harassing some traders for tax evasion.

According to Nana Boakye, he was informed that the action of the authorities led some traders in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region, to close their shops.

The GRA is also said to have closed the China Mall in Accra and the Authority reports that the mall has not rectified its electronic tax system, making it difficult to audit its taxes.

Nana Boakye, in her observations on Peace FM The program “Kokrokoo” relating to the action of the GRA, attributed to its communicators the misfortune of the traders.

He noted that the Communications Department of the Authority has failed to perform its functions effectively.

He said that the GRA sent its officials to sit in the shops of some traders in Kumasi but, for him, this decision is “oppressive”.

“I understand that we need to maximize revenue, but GRA’s communications team, they’ve let the nation down…I haven’t heard any response from GRA. Why are they doing this to the government?…I find it heinous. Today’s global economy is tough. Traders complain, “ he fumed.

He also said that after hearing about the action of the GRA, he asked the management for an explanation, but to no avail.

For him, if he did not get an answer as the national organizer of the ruling party, he could not imagine the frustrations of the traders because no one from the Authority explains things to them.

According to him, it took the chairman of the board of the GRA, Dr. Tony Oteng-Gyasi, to explain to him the cause of their action.

“Why should even call the chairman of the board to have the chairman of the board talk to me on the phone for 30 minutes, explaining to me that it’s not like that? How?”, He asked.
